Blue Lassi — food in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Blue Lassi

banarasiFood

Thick fruit lassis in earthen cups — a lane-side ritual near the ghats where yogurt meets seasonal fruit.

Yogurt beaten until it holds the fruit

Blue Lassi occupies a narrow lane off the temple quarter — a shopfront so small the queue becomes the architecture. The name refers to the painted facade, not the drink: inside, thick set yogurt is whisked with fruit, saffron, or dry fruits and served in kulhads that cool your palms. Banarasi food culture treats lassi as punctuation between spicy courses, and this stall is among the most photographed because it still tastes better than it needs to for fame.

Flavours and the rhythm of the lane

Mango, banana, pomegranate, and mixed dry-fruit versions rotate with the market. The texture matters — neither runny shake nor frozen dessert, but something that coats a spoon and slows you down. Film crews love the morning light in Kachori Gali; locals love that the recipe has not drifted toward syrup.

Where it sits on your food map

Walk here from Kashi Vishwanath or descend from Dashashwamedh Ghat through Godowlia. Pair with savoury stops — Kashi Chat Bhandar for evening tang, or save appetite for a sit-down thali elsewhere. Blue Lassi is a ten-minute pause that resets your palate for the next lane.

Visitor tips

  • Seasonal fruit flavours change — mango in summer, pomegranate in cooler months
  • Eat with a spoon; the clay cup (kulhad) is part of the experience and is disposable
  • Visit after [Kashi Vishwanath Temple](/destinations/varanasi/attractions/kashi-vishwanath-temple) darshan while walking the lane network
  • One lassi is filling; share if you plan a full meal at [Baati Chokha](/destinations/varanasi/restaurants/baati-chokha) later
